The Pythagorean Theorem 3102.4.2 Use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the missing measure in a right triangle including those from contextual situations
2
What is the Pythagorean Theorem? In a right triangle, the side opposite the right angle is called the hypotenuse. This side is always the longest side of a right triangle. The other two sides are called the legs of the triangle! leg hypotenuse
3
The Pythagorean Theorem If a and b are the lengths of the legs of a right triangle and c is the length of the hypotenuse, then the square of the length of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the lengths of the legs. Thus: a 2 + b 2 = c 2 a b c
4
Here is an example! a = 8, b = 15, c =? 8 15 c
5
Find the Length of a side a 10 25
6
Now try these!! 1.a = 16, b = 63, c = ? 2.a = ?, b = 5, c = 15 3.a = 9, b = 7, c = ? 4.a = 99, b = ?, c = 101 Answers: 1.c = 65 2.a = 14.14 3.c = 11.40 4.b = 20
