The Dynamic Earth
2
BELLWORK Why are greenhouse gases such a major environmental concern? Be specific!
3
QUIZ Assignment: Create a five question quiz about everything we have learned so far (geosphere and atmosphere). You will be graded based on the quiz you create.
4
QUIZ RULES Must include: At least 2 multiple choice At least 1 discussion (must explain “why”) At least 1 definition The other is your choice. At least 2 questions must be about geosphere and at least 2 must be about atmosphere. The other is your choice.
5
QUIZ When we begin, you will: 1)Push your desks so you are side by side with your partner. 2)Be given 2 quizzes created by classmates. 3)Work with your partner to complete both quizzes. You have 20 minutes. 4)Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper and staple it to the quiz when you are finished!
6
Hydrosphere All of the water on or near Earth’s surface Includes oceans, lakes rivers, streams, etc.
7
Hydrologic (Water) Cycle
8
AQUATIC LIFE ZONES What are the two types of aquatic life zones? 1)Saltwater or marine (97% of water) 2)Freshwater (3% of water)
9
AQUATIC LIFE ZONES What factors limit biodiversity at different aquatic depths? What things affect which species are able to survive? Temperature Access to sunlight for photosynthesis Dissolved oxygen Availability of nutrients
10
Importance of Oceans Cover approximately 71% of Earth’s surface Regulate Earth’s climate Provide habitat for marine animals and plants Human produced waste flows into the ocean and is diluted when it spreads out
11
Importance of Oceans Oceans have two major life zones: Coastal Zone – Warm, nutrient-rich shallow water that extends from high tide mark on land to the edge of the continental shelf (the underwater part of the continent). Open Sea – The part of the ocean beyond the continental shelf.
12
BIOSPHERE The narrow layer around Earth’s surface in which life can exist Made up of the upper part of the geosphere, the lower part of the atmosphere, and most of the hydrosphere
13
Group Assignment: Why Earth? Assignment: Earth is perfectly suited to support human life. Create a list of as many characteristics of Earth that allow human life to exist. Example: Temperature
