What is Earth Science?
2
Do Now: What does it mean to be dynamic? What does it mean to be dynamic? Is your life dynamic? In what way? Is your life dynamic? In what way?
3
Earth Science Is NOT a Pure Science Earth Science Is NOT a Pure Science Earth Science IS an Applied Science Earth Science IS an Applied Science
4
Pure Science VS Applied Science BiologyUse of Principles BiologyUse of Principles Physicsfrom Pure Science Physicsfrom Pure Science Chemistryto study the Earth Chemistryto study the Earth these Principles are APPLIED ex: Meteorology
5
Earth Science is: The study of the earth, its changing systems, and its place in the Universe. The study of the earth, its changing systems, and its place in the Universe.

BRANCHES ASTRONOMY oldest branch oldest branch universe beyond earth universe beyond earthGEOLOGY Earth’s origin, history Earth’s origin, history Structure of solid Earth Structure of solid Earth Processes that shape Earth Ex: Earthquakes Processes that shape Earth Ex: Earthquakes

Branches continued: METEOROLOGY Earth’s atmosphere Earth’s atmosphere Weather WeatherOCEANOGRAPHY Earth’s oceans Earth’s oceans Research ships study salinity, climate change, waves etc. Research ships study salinity, climate change, waves etc.
8
By understanding how natural forces shape our environment, Earth Scientists may better forecast potential disasters and help save lives and property.

ZONES OR SPHERES Earth is the only planet known (at present) to support life as we know it. Earth is the only planet known (at present) to support life as we know it. It is able to do this because of the interactions among its spheres/zones. It is able to do this because of the interactions among its spheres/zones. ATMOSPHERE: gaseous envelope surrounding Earth, provides living things with oxygen and carbon dioxide. HYDROSPHERE: all water on Earth: includes oceans, streams, rivers, lakes, seas (CRYOSPHERE: snow, ice, glaciers, frozen ground)
10
Zones or Spheres continued: LITHOSPHERE (aka Geosphere): Earth itself, all physical features except water. OUTER SPACE Note: The BIOSPHERE is an interaction of those other spheres which gives rise to conditions that support life. The living things on the planet comprise the biosphere.
