1 A state trooper stopped a car that was driving down a country road at night without lights and weaving slowly back and forth across the road. The driver had no license. A woman was in the passenger side of the front seat. A man and woman occupied the back seat. They were taken in and a ticket was issued and bond posted….

2 Here is some additional information: The man driving the car had been blind since birth and had never experienced the feeling of driving a car. His wife and some friends decided to take him out on a quiet moonlit night and let him drive for a few minutes. The lights were not on because he did not need them. Of course, he had no driver's license. The car was weaving for obvious reasons…

3 Is this additional information pertinent to the disposition of this case? How is the machine metaphor relevant to this situation? from Victor Thompson, Without Sympathy or Enthusiasm

4 Ways to use metaphor (machine) in diagnosing organizational situations Mechanized nature of org. realizes goal or ideal; contributes to success Org. problem linked to excessive formalization (mechanization) Org. problem linked to a lack of formalization (mechanization) Formalization (mechanization) is an unintended consequence of another goal Others????? How (if at all) does Frederickson’s essay relate to the machine metaphor? What’s the problem? Which of the above (if any) is pertinent?
