RWANDA: Major achievements GeSCI Annual Report 2009 Capacity building on e-content development and evaluation. Some content has already been evaluated and contextualization underway Input and facilitation of development of ICT4E policy Strengthening of understanding of Teacher Professional Development practices as regards ICT, development of framework to guide ICT TPD practice. Support to baseline study of ICT4E in schools AchievementImpact or Relevance For first time, MoE can evaluate and deploy appropriate content for schools ICT4E policy vital for coordination and rationalization of ICT4E agenda TPD vital for effective and sustainable use of ICT4E. TPD framework will lead to alignment of fragmented TPD initiatives and effective TPD practices. Accurate data available for planning

GHANA: major achievements GeSCI Annual Report 2009 First ever baseline study of ICT4E in schools finalized New general curriculum framework and ICT curriculum developed and under implementation ICTs incorporated in draft Education Sector Strategic Plan Improvements in MoE’s infrastructure Agreement by USAID to provide support to GeSCI to assist MoE on project basis- discussions continue with USAID and World Bank. Achievements Impact or Relevance MoE now has solid data for planning ICT as a subject properly taught in schools MoE and donors financial allocations guided by ESP. ICTs can now be allocated dedicated financial resources and activities can be sustained staff now have institutional email for communication and enhanced website for information sharing Donor interest in ICT4E for first time and interest in local donors to support GeSCI work is a new business model for country programmes

New country model GeSCI Annual Report 2009 GeSCI funding for country programmes all from donor “headquarters ” as part of core funding GeSCI selected countries based on need, interest and commitment Partnership was mainly with MoEs Needs based model Old modelNew model GeSCI funding increasingly programme based and most likely will be from local donor offices and Governments All new country programmes will require specific programme-based funding in addition to other criteria. New country programmes will involve joint partnership of MoE, GeSCI and donor(s). Service model

ARP: Main achievements GeSCI Annual Report 2009 Organization of AKE III (held in Ghana July 09) at which 16 countries participated. Focus was on curriculum and assessment Review of progress made in Namibia: findings indicate progress has been uneven and less than expected. Country assessments of Kenya, Tanzania and Ethiopia in consultation with MoEs Development of e-content development costing tool Achievement Impact or Relevance AKE workshops raise awareness of key issues in ICT4E and promote country sharing of experiences, learning and collaboration Reviews necessary to track progress, identify obstacle and generate new knowledge. Also reviews spur accelerated progress. Assessment necessary to understand local context, opportunities and constraints. Assessments also promote dialogue on ICT4E issues in the countries. Costing e-content development will raise awareness of costs and factors affecting costs.

AKE future direction GeSCI Annual Report 2009 Continental reach with 16 countries from East, West and South Africa No country workshops Virtual Workspace (VWS) using web 2.0 tools for continuous communication and collaboration Focus on ICT4E issues Old AKE New AKE AKE now organized on regional basis: New Finland funding for East and South Africa Proposals for Francophone/ West Africa under development Country workshops to tackle specific issues on specific countries Strengthen VWS and link to Resource Centre and Research. VWS also builds ICT skills More focus on Knowledge Society Issues
