Tecumseh was a Shawnee chief and influential Native American leader. He wanted to unite Native Americans against US settlers pushing them off their land.

The US forces under the command of William Henry Harrison defeated the Shawnee and destroyed his town. William Henry Harrison will take the nickname Tippecanoe after this battle and become our 9 th President.

ANDREW JACKSON led 2,000 VOLUNTEERS from Tennessee to attack a Creek stronghold in ALABAMA. The US Army (Andrew Jackson) Won! Tennessee is called The Volunteer State, a nickname earned during the War of 1812 (thousands of volunteer soldiers from Tennessee played a prominent role in this war, especially during the Battle of New Orleans).

Tennessee was able to purchase West Tennessee (known as the Jackson Purchase). Andrew Jackson, James Winchester, and James Overton thought they could make money by creating a new town on the Mississippi River. They named it MEMPHIS (from Ancient Egypt). Memphis would soon became a major producer of Cotton.
