3 Venkatesan C, et al. 24th National IASSTD & AIDS & 11th SEAWP IUSTI Conference, India, 2000 OBJECTIVES To investigate the sexual behavior of MSM, particularly the consistency of condom use (i.e. frequency of sex with out a condom) To investigate whether MSM used condoms differentially with different types of partners.

4 Venkatesan C, et al. 24th National IASSTD & AIDS & 11th SEAWP IUSTI Conference, India, 2000 METHODS Four MSM were trained to administer a structured questionnaire. Participants were recruited at the cruising areas and by snowball method (n=96).

5 Venkatesan C, et al. 24th National IASSTD & AIDS & 11th SEAWP IUSTI Conference, India, 2000 DATA COLLECTION Details on demographics, sexual behavior and consistency of condom use with different types of sex partners were obtained. i.e. - men, women or transgender persons - steady, casual, known or commercial sex partner

Known partner - known for at least 6 months prior to having sex, not committed to but had sex within the previous 6 months.

8 Venkatesan C, et al. 24th National IASSTD & AIDS & 11th SEAWP IUSTI Conference, India, 2000 CONSISTENCY OF CONDOM USE (4 POINT SCALE) Always = used condoms in 100% of the sexual encounters Most of the time = used condoms in >50% of the sexual encounters but not 100% Occasionally = used condoms in <50% of the sexual encounters but not 0% Never = did not use condoms in any sexual encounter so far

9 Venkatesan C, et al. 24th National IASSTD & AIDS & 11th SEAWP IUSTI Conference, India, 2000 DEMOGRAPHICS Age group: range - 17 to 38 years (mean - 25 yrs) Educational status: Graduates & Coll.Stud - 40%, 6th to 12th Std. - 41% Mean Monthly Income: Rs.2028 (0 to Rs.7500) Marital status: Married - 26%

10 Venkatesan C, et al. 24th National IASSTD & AIDS & 11th SEAWP IUSTI Conference, India, 2000 BISEXUAL BEHAVIOR 26% are married ~60% had sex with woman at least once in their lifetime Mean No. of female partners in the previous year - 1.4 (range: 0 to 30) ~99% did not disclose their bisexual behavior to their female partners

16 Venkatesan C, et al. 24th National IASSTD & AIDS & 11th SEAWP IUSTI Conference, India, 2000 CONCLUSIONS Condom use with Steady partners (male or female) is very low, putting them at increased risk of STI/HIV infection Condom use with female partners is low compared to that with male partners. Condom promotion programs should stress consistent use of condoms with any type of partner Bisexual behavior needs to be addressed in HIV prevention programs Qualitative research could find out the reasons for differential use of condoms
