IS THE TWITTER REVOLUTION DEAD?

THE POWER OF SOCIAL MEDIA Turkish Prime Minister, Recep Erdogan banned Twitter in Turkey. The Ban did not last long because protests were made against the ban. Citizens mocked the Ban by logging onto Twitter through a different DNS. Traffic from Twitter was the highest in Turkey because of this ban. Despite this Erdogan's party still won the elections because he was voted for by working class living without social media access and living in surrounding areas outside Turkey.

Uses Of Social Media Social Media like Twitter is used to overthrow governments or get them elected. Social media connects us when reaching out seems impossible and it can be a lifeline in times of disaster. Social media can bring strangers together. Whether that meeting instigates a revolution, however, is a moot point. Just like the hashtags and trending topics on Twitter, revolutions have a short lifespan. Social media is a massive improvement in communication channels: it connects and distributes information quickly.

Revolution through Tweets In 2010, a New Yorker writer Malcolm Gladwell provided two reasons to explain the mechanics of a revolution powered by social media Retweeting and reposting is said to be participation as opposed to being there physically to protest. Revolutions require Coordination and organization which makes them complex. International support and condemnation can determine the success or failures of revolution. For example France helped Libyan fighters against Gaddafis forces. Also Russia's support of Syria has helped the country avoid blanket international condemnation.
