1 LJUBLJANA, November 2006 Goverment of the Republic of Slovenia Ministrstry of Transport PREPARATIONS AND CONSTRUCTION TIMING OF MAIN RAILWAY LINES IN DIRECTIONS OF PANEUROPEAN CORRIDORS V AND X IN THE REPUBLIC OF SLOVENIA

3 Conceptual design of railway system for speed 160 km/h (up to max 250 km/h) on the territory of the Republic of Slovenia Foreword Based on high capacity network national guidelines, conceptual design considers the following basic parameters for all branches on corridors V and X in the Republic of Slovenia: - double tracks, electrified; - basic speed parameter is 160 km/h and more (up to 250 km/h), whereas detailed variants will be evaluated in further project phases, considering spatial management, investments, time savings and other factors, which influent the selection; - possible connections to larger inhabited areas shall be considered; - possibility of incremental completion and connection to the existing track specially on the stations of large centers; - existing tracks are partially conserved or partially renewed on certain sections (will be used for general traffic as well as suburban traffic services) and partially dismounted. 8 On section Ljubljana – Divača (Sežana) a new 160 km/h track will be built (also more if possible - up to 250 km/h). The new track will be positioned in approximately same corridor as existing one and shall be connected to larger inhabited areas or traffic hubs such as Sežana, Divača, Postojna, and in the same time it should enable section by section construction, which shall be connected to existing track in already mentioned settlements and locations such as Prestranek, Rakek, Planina, Preserje and Brezovica. Considering the parameters of the existing tracks (small curve radiuses, longitudinal inclinations, tunnel dimensions, passages…) it cannot be upgraded for higher speeds without significant changes of the route (the new track uses only existing corridor – Ljubljana - Preserje section is the only part on which the existing route will be used, while on other sections it overlay existing route only on occasional spots). The existing track Ljubljana – Sežana remains in operation only in those sections, on which connection between smaller stations and settlements with high speed track are needed, while the traffic of local passenger trains as well as cargo trains remains and allows access to existing industrial tracks. The length of existing track Ljubljana - Sežana is 115 km, while the new track is only (depends f the version) approximately 75 to 85 km long. Divača remains an important hub on this track, where the existing track from Koper, regional track from Pula and Rakitovec as well as the new (second) track from Koper will join the main track. The new 160 km/h double track shall be constructed on the planned route of variant I/3 »second track of Divača – Koper section«, which will connect Trieste with Divača and over Divača also Koper with the new track. Connection from Rijeka shall be also considered on the Divača – Ljubljana section. In Ljubljana area, track will be connected to the Ljubljana Hub, with the new passenger center (LPC) and the new system of bypass tracks (on the northern side of the city) as well as passenger bypass line, which will be conducted to the railway station partially underground (under the Rožnik hill). 12 There is a new route planned for the 160 km/h track towards Gorenjska, which deviates from existing corridor towards highway corridor and which includes connection to the Brnik airport. Northern from Kranj it approaches the Sava River and follows it all the way to Jesenice. Existing track from Ljubljana to Kranj remains in use for the suburban passenger traffic. Existing track on Ljubljana - Jesenice section is 64 km long, while the new track will not be significantly shorter - approx 62 km, however it would allow shorter travel times.
