Hormones an Overview The body’s main system for internal chemical regulation is the endocrine system. A hormone is a regulatory chemical that travels from its production site through the blood to affect other sites in the body. Vertebrates make over 50 different hormones. Hormones are made and secreted mainly by organs called endocrine glands. Hormones travel in the blood to target cells, which respond to the hormones. Hormones govern our metabolic rate, growth, maturation, and reproduction.
