ESCTAIC’s 21st Annual Meeting 2010 Vrije Universiteit medical centre, Amsterdam Netherlands 06 – 09 th October 2010 - Identifying Ergonomic Requirements of ICT for Healthcare Working Systems - Podtschaske, B. & Friesdorf, W.

Structure Situation & Problem Objective & Approach Results & Conclusion

Situation Possibilities Resources ICT – to gain higher quality, safety and efficiency!

Problem

Objective Before developing ICT solutions: improve the understanding of healthcare working systems! Specifying usability context analysis by domain specific models!

Approach Concept based approach 1.Screening of Ergonomic Standards: Usability Framework; 2.Identifying, adopting and developing of domain specific ergonomic models and methods (MedicoErgonomics); 3.Exemplary use in an analysis of the context of use (Case Study).

Results (1/4) – Usability Framework environment task equipment user product (ICT) goals effectivness efficiency satisfaction Context of Use Intended outcome Outcome of use Usability measures Usability

Results (2/4) – Model of collaborative work coordination communication [Steinheider & Legrady, 2001] Model of collaborative work shared knowledge

Results (3/4) – Case Study; Context of Use Requirements to support „collaborative work“ Coordination: –better use of resources (more efficient) –reduction of treatment time (reducing of unnecessary treatments) –active, holistic therapy planning and controlling –support of administrative processes Communication: –effective communication and information flows –no changes in mediums –improved information transparency –high quality of used data

Results (4/4) – Case Study: Tools/ Functions Evident process support „collaborative work“ CoordinationCommunication 1.resource planning tool 2.procurement support and documentation tool 3.(user-oriented) structured documentation of health biography 4.workflow supporting tool 5.structured diagnosis and therapy documentation and codification 1.interface management: harmonizing different mediums and electronic systems 2.(user-oriented) structured documentation of health biography 3.(user-oriented) medical encyclopedia 4.user specific communities 5.logbook

Lessons Learned, Discussion and Outlook MedicoErgonomic models are able to support the usability context analysis  better understanding of the healthcare working system by structuring the requirements Further usability context analysis are recommended (chronic heart diseases, dementia patients, diabetes mellitus etc.).
