2. This world retrovirus epidemic began before 1980 but can be well considered as starting in earnest in 1990, and it is reaching levels of prevalence in Africa like 39 % of the population of Zambia. The cause of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

3. The purpose of this lecture is to supply a brief geographic orientation for 42/44 subSahara countries so that their situations can be better appreciated. Comoros and also Mauritius, adding to 44, are islands in the southern Indian ocean with very low HIV percents.
