1 Monkey Wrench Quilt Square These materials work well with Middle School Mathematics GPS standards/elements: M6G1b; M7G1b; M7G2a; M7G3c; M8G1d. Use these materials to create a large, interactive 18” x 18” white posterboard quilt square. Use foam sheeting or construction paper that has been laminated for students to practice the mathematical concepts of rotation, similarity, congruence, and/or translation. Created by Jessie Moreau, Gwinnett County School System

2 Geometry in Quilts Quilt squares are made up of a set of plane shapes that are generally similar or congruent in shape and size and are rotated (turned), translated (slid), dilated (size change) and/or reflected (flipped). When the following materials are printed then cut out of craft foam sheeting or laminated construction paper, the concepts above can all be worked on while creating the quilt squares. Students can also work on IEP objectives such as matching to color or shape; grasp & release; turn taking behaviors, identification of shapes/colors. For final student projects, the materials can then be reprinted onto construction paper and students can arrange the quilt squares then glue down their final product.

3 Cut 4 rectangles in white; Cut 4 rectangles in a contrasting color. Cut 4 triangles in white; Cut 4 triangles in a color different than the rectangles.

4 Cut 1 square in white
