Bone And Bone Tissue
3
Skeletal system Supportive Connective tissue Cartilage Bone
4
Bone (osseous) Tissue Strength of iron Light as pine wood NOT dry, brittle or dead! Continually changing
5
Functions Support Protects Storehouse for calcium & phosphate Manufactures red & white blood cells Movement
6
Classification of bones Long bones- longer than they are wide Example: femur Short bones – equal in length, width and thickness Examples: ankle, wrists
7
Classification Flat Bones – thin or curved Examples: ribs, scapulae, sternum bones of cranium (skull) Irregular Bones – do not fit neatly into any category. Example: vertebrae, facial bones, hipbones
8
Classification Sesamoid Bones – small bones embedded within certain tendons. Example: kneecap (patella) Accessory Bones – occur when developing bones do not fuse completely. May look like extra bones or broken bone Example: found in the feet.
12
Types of Bone Cells Osteogenic - small spindle shape, deep in periostem, high mitotic potential, change in to osteoblast during healing
13
Types of Bone cells Osteoblast (bone + bud ) Pumps Calcium and phosphate in and out. Found in growing bone and periostem.
14
Types of Bone Cells Osteocyte Main bone cell Fully developed bone cell Maintains homeostasis of bone Puts calcium in blood.
15
Type of bone cells Osteoclast - Multinuclear giant cells Resorbing - dissolving and assimilating bone matrix Come from WBC (monocytes) Helps to reshape the bone
16
Types of bone cells Bone-lining cells Surface of most bones in adults Come from osteoblasts May be like osteogenic Contribute to mineral homeostasis
