4 FEMA: A Brief History 1803-1950: Era of Fires and Floods 1950: The Civil Defense Act is created 1960s-1970s: Federal Disaster Assistance Administration 1970: Disaster Relief Act (amended in 1974) 1979: FEMA created by President Carter 1988: Stafford Act Passed 2002: FEMA becomes a part of DHS

10 History of FEMA Corps Created March 2012, when FEMA and the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) partnered. FEMA Corps Members devote all 10 months of national service solely to FEMA disaster efforts Program goals: Recruit, train, deploy, retain members Promote Emergency Management Workforce Life-long commitment to disaster resilience

13 The Legacy of FEMA Corps In just over 3 years, approximately 2,400 FEMA Corps Members have served over 3.3 million hours, connecting disaster survivors to the resources they need. This assists FEMA to be more effective and efficient, and makes our communities more resilient.
