1. 1 Road Safety Education Cambodia Safe School Zone September, 2010 By: Taing Koungveng

2. 2 Rational In Cambodia, young primary school student (age 6-12) represents very high percentage both fatality and casualty 15% & 22% respectively 41% of them were pedestrians, 17% were bicyclist and 33% motorbike passengers. Unsafe environment (No warning sign, cross walk side), less education for student and driver and the lack of law enforcement contribute much of crash.

3. 3  Safe school zone intend to help schoolchildren avoid of traffic crash around school area

4. 4 Project objectives –To minimize the possibility of crashes and near miss incidents in the vicinity of schools by improving road safety environment, and education Project duration –August-December 2010

5. 5 Expected outcome Road Safe environment development Knowledge of students increased on safe behavior on the road through awareness rising in schools and learning of road safety curriculum; Peer education on safe behavior on the road to their families and friends

6. 6 Project Implementation  Environment element Traffic sign installation: Speed limit, Slow down, Children crossing and etc. –It is necessary to provide important information to drivers to improve safety within the school zone area Rumble strip –important as drivers, who are intentionally or unintentionally should slow down their speed at the school area

7. 7 Project Implementation  Environment element Road coloring –The road coloring will be high visibilities for all road users, especially to aware all drivers that the school area is entered Cross side walk –Develop school cross walk side at the entrance to school. It is an important element of a Road-Crash Free School Zone

8. 8 Project Implementation  Environment element Safe pick up area and waiting area –to develop a safe picking up area, where is in appropriate distance from the entrance, and the child could access safely. Detour road –Detour road means U-turn for vehicle with reasonable safety and assist with parents or sender for picking up or setting down children on the school side of a road

10. 10  Activity elements School education –The school education is important part to provide schoolchildren directly of knowledge gained from the school curriculum Helmet Bank –All provided helmets are managed in a helmet bank for school student School awareness –awareness in school through banner, poster, and information board will tack action to aware and improve knowledge of student Project Implementation

11. 11  Activity elements Community awareness –Basic safety behaviors on the road, speeding around school will educate through awareness material in Communities Road barrier –The barrier will be used when the children get out of school at the school ending time Enforcement –The enforcement on speeding is a priority for the first stage of road-crash free school zone launching.
