IDETC/CIE 20092 Collaborative learning in design Goals –Develop an infrastructure that supports effective knowledge management for student design teams –Assist members of design teams to build and retain knowledge created through discussions, project documents and sharing of artifacts
3
IDETC/CIE 20093 Common Issues in Design Teams Knowledge sharing Information retrieval
4
IDETC/CIE 20094 Background Group memory systems Scientometrics Textual Analysis of Design Conversations –Automatic Topic Segmentation –Text Summarization –Cluster Analysis –Information Visualization Techniques
5
IDETC/CIE 20095 Capturing in-process data We have 6 years of data from project classes that used the Kiva for team collaboration –Combines functions of e-mail, bboards and chat –Each year’s Kiva has hundreds of threads and thousands of posts and files

7
IDETC/CIE 20097 Approach DesignWebs –synthesize the design knowledge from multiple sources of information used by students during a design project –enable users to see connections between the concepts used in an artifact at different levels –can reveal the current state of the project and the underlying structure of the design
8
IDETC/CIE 20098 Approach Seed the DesignWeb with research papers Automatic topic segmentation & summarization Extract noun-phrases and named entities Perform co-word analysis to construct multiple networks that map the strength of association between keywords in textual data Perform hierarchical clustering Use graphical display algorithms that enable users to search and navigate the graphs to access the underlying documents

IDETC/CIE 20099 DesignWebs Scenario Civil Engineering Junior Projects Class –One year, a student team worked on redesigning the main road through campus to improve pedestrian safety and campus visibility to the community –They uncovered several problems with the University Center entrance, which mixes pedestrian traffic with delivery trucks and parking –Next year, a new team of students took on the project of redesigning the UC entrance to improve pedestrian safety, improve the flow of traffic, and improve wayfinding for visitors.

IDETC/CIE 200912 Challenges Segment resolution Levels of abstraction Students are novices in technical writing Alternate views for different users Credibility of source Identifying the structure of created knowledge, especially for different versions of the same document
13
IDETC/CIE 200913 Research Questions Can creating DesignWebs automatically from student design documents be useful for organizing the information into product structures? Can product structures be used for developing computational environments that support systematic modeling of design problems? Can DesignWebs help us understand the content and nature of information related to various aspects of the artifact and how designers generate and refine it?
