Chapter 3 Interpreting Data Graphs, charts, maps and tables
2
Terms for the chapter: TableFlow chart VariableLegend Independent variable Dependent variable Line graphCompass rose X axisDirection indicator Y axisScale Bar graph Diagram
3
Table Usually used for numerical data. Pay attention to the headings of the columns or rows. Usually used to show a relationship between two things. Turn to page 13 in your workbook. Complete #’s 1-4 using the information from the table
4
Number 1 The answer is “a” Find the temperature of the water and go to the next column under oxygen content and the answer is given
5
Number 2 The answer is “b” Follow the oxygen levels as you go up in degrees.
6
Number 3 The answer is “C” For this question you need to use the scientific information on the table to come up with your answer. 23 is between 20 and 25 which leaves only one answer.
7
Line Graphs Shows how two or more variables are related. Usually shows how changes in one variable will lead to a change in the other variable. IE temperature and depth of the ocean. Turn to pages 15 and 16 and answer #’s 4 and 5
8
Number 4 The answer is “B” Look at the temperature column and compare it to the depth—what happens as the depth increases?
9
Number 5 The answer is “C” This graph has 2 sets of information. One about the vegetation and the other about the deer population. You needed to look at the legend to determine which line to use for the question and then you had to compare the information to find out that when the deer population grew the vegetation levels decreased
10
Bar Graphs Usually used to compare something over time. Each bar is a quantity. Look at the key to determine what the bars are comparing Turn to page 17 and answer #6
11
Number 6 The answer is “C” The bar with the highest number of deaths is July.
12
Diagrams Picture that shows how things are related. Visualizes the “how” information Turn to page 18 and answer question #7. Continue with #’s 8-10 on page 21.
13
Number 7 The answer is “D” The straight arrows are the sun’s rays and the curved arrows represent the rotation of the earth. Answers a and b make no sense because the area in question is dark. D makes the most sense because the point is in the middle of the darkened area.
14
Numbers 8-10 The answer to #8 is “C” The beginning depth is 2.5 and the ending is 3.0 The answer to #9 is “A” The boundary is pulling apart. The answer to #10 is “D” Have to recall that magma pushes up to form new crust
15
Flow Chart Shows series of steps in a process. Shows how things are related to each other in the process. A visual is given to show the “how” Can be used to show cause and effect. Arrows are often used. Turn to page 22 and complete #11
16
Number 11 The answer is “B” The arrow that points to oxygen is coming from the tree
17
Maps Represents a place or an area Shows where objects are located Remember the following terms: Legend Direction indicator Compass rose Scale
18
Page 23 #’s 12 and 13 The answer to # 12 is “B” Analyze each answer—which makes the most sense? The answer to #13 is “C” Recall! Need to remember how to use the weather symbols. The legend tells you which front is coming through!!!
19
Testing Your Understanding Page 24 Answer questions 1 and 2 in the workbook. The answer to number 1 is “C” The graph indicates that the population declined dramatically but then made a comeback. This indicates a resistance. The answer to number 2 is “B” The racoon eats both corn and mice
