Active Transport Wednesday, April 26, 2017 To understand what active transport is and how it works
3
Active Transport Active transport allows for substances to be absorbed against a concentration gradient (from a lower to higher concentration) It occurs in the root hair cells to absorb water and minerals and in the gut (which takes a low concentration of nutrients and passes them into the blood which has a high concentration of nutrients)
4
Villi The inside of the small intestine is covered in millions of tiny projections known as villi They increase the surface area allowing for digested food to be absorbed quickly into the blood (absorbed via active transport)
5
Root Hair Cells Root hair cells are specialised for absorbing water and minerals via active transport The concentration of minerals is usually higher in the root hair than in the soil so active transport, requiring energy, moves the materials from an area of low concentration to high concentration
