The Endocrine System Biology 12 Ms. Bowie
3
The Pineal Gland Involved in: Sleep cycles, circadian rhythms
Hormone produced: Melatonin
4
The Pituitary Gland THE MASTER GLAND
Divided in to 2 parts: The Anterior pituitary The Posterior Pituitary
5
The Pituitary Gland THE MASTER GLAND
The Anterior Pituitary Involved: Control of most other glands in the body Produces 7 important hormones: human growth hormone (hGH), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), prolactin (PRL), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH).
6
The Pituitary Gland THE MASTER GLAND
The Posterior Pituitary Involved: Storage & release of 3 two hormones produced in the hypothalamus Hormones: thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH),
7
The Thyroid Gland Involved in: Hormone produced: Metabolism
Blood pressure Regulation of tissue growth Decrease calcium levels in blood Hormone produced: Thyroxine Calcitonin
8
The Parathyroid Gland Involved in: Hormone produced:
Increases calcium levels in blood Hormone produced: Parathyroid hormone
9
The Thymus Gland Involved in: Hormone produced:
Maturation & Training of Immune Cells (T-Cells, etc.) Hormone produced: Thymosin
10
The Adrenal Glands Separated into 2 parts: The Adrenal Cortex
The Adrenal Medulla
11
The Adrenal Cortex Involved in: Hormone produced:
Long term stress response Increase blood glucose Increase blood volume & pressure Immune suppression Water retention Hormone produced: Glucocorticoids Mineralcorticoids
12
The Adrenal Medulla Involved in: Hormone produced:
Short term stress response (fight or flight) Increase blood glucose Increase heart rate Vasoconstriction Blood diversion from stomach to muscles Hormone produced: Epinephrine (adrenaline) Norepinephrine
13
The Pancreas Islets of Langerhans
Involved in: Blood glucose regulation Hormone produced: Insulin (Beta cells) Decrease blood sugar levels Glucagon (Alpha cells) Increase blood sugar levels
14
The Ovaries Involved in: Hormone produced: Female reproduction
Female body shape Hormone produced: Estrogens Progesterone
15
The Testes Involved in: Hormone produced:
Male reproduction (production of sperm) Male sex characteristics (e.g. Deep voice, muscle mass, body hair, etc. Hormone produced: Testosterone (androgen)
