Ask and Answer Essay Writing Process BODY

BODY Paragraph Sentence Types TOPIC SENTENCE(Write the controlling sentence of the paragraph based on the THESIS) MAIN IDEA OF THE PARAGRPAH/ MAJOR DETAIL of the Essay DEFINITION (Define the topic sentence) MINOR DETAIL of the Body DETAIL/EXAMPLE/REASON (Provide further details/examples/reasons about the Paragraph) Explain DETAIL/EXAMPLE/REASON (Explain the reason for the detail/example/reason) TRANSITION (Develop a transition that takes the reader to the next topic)

Step 1 Use your THESIS as the basis for each body paragraph’s development. (REMEMBER – The order in which the points are listed in the THESIS is the same order in which they must be developed in the Body paragraphs.) Should tobacco products be banned? Well, many people believe that tobacco is dangerous. In fact, they think that it cause a lot of problems to the average body. These problems can include breathing issues, bad breath, and cancer. The nicotine in tobacco products has been linked to several illnesses. Nicotine is a substance that coats the lungs and other organs necessary to breathe with millions of carcinogens. Carcinogens are cancer causing agents that are frequently found in many chemicals. Therefore, tobacco should be banned because it detrimentally affects breathing, contains nicotine, and introduces carcinogens into the body that cause cancer. Body Paragraph 1 Body Paragraph 2Body Paragraph 3

Step 2 TOPIC SENTENCE Your 1 st TOPIC SENTENCE comes from the 1 st point listed in your THESIS STATEMENT Turn the point into a simple sentence Example Thesis: Therefore, tobacco should be banned because it detrimentally affects breathing, contains nicotine, and introduces carcinogens into the body that cause cancer. EXAMPLE BODY 1 Example Topic Sentence: Tobacco should be banned because it detrimentally affects breathing.

Step 3 Now that you have a topic sentence (which acts as the MAIN IDEA of the paragraph that you are developing), you will need to create a DEFINTION sentence that helps to define the point that you have asserted in the THESIS. To do so, change the TOPIC sentence into a question. EXAMPLE BODY 1 Example Topic Sentence: Tobacco should be banned because it detrimentally affects breathing. How does tobacco detrimentally affect breathing?

Step 4 Again, remember the notes on Following Logically Ordered Wording and answer the question in a brief statement as if you were discussing the subject with someone. EXAMPLE BODY 1 Example Topic Sentence: Tobacco should be banned because it detrimentally affects breathing. How does tobacco detrimentally affect breathing? It blocks the airway with tar that builds up after tobacco use. (The bolded sentence is an example of an answer to the question formed by the TOPIC sentence.)

Step 5 Now, insert the answer as the 2 nd sentence of that BODY paragraph. After you have written the 2 nd sentence, please turn it into a question on a separate sheet of paper. EXAMPLE BODY 1 Example Topic Sentence: Tobacco should be banned because it detrimentally affects breathing. It blocks the airway with tar that builds up after tobacco use. How does tobacco block the airway with tar? The 2 nd sentence defines the 1 st sentence.

Step 6 Once you have the 2 nd second sentence turned into a question, answer the question in a declarative statement as though you were still in a conversation. EXAMPLE BODY 1 Example Topic Sentence : Tobacco should be banned because it detrimentally affects breathing. It blocks the airway with tar that builds up affect tobacco use. How does tobacco block the airway with tar? Tobacco blocks the airway with tar leaving microscopic tar participles in the throat and lungs after each use of tobacco. (This sentence is an example of a response to the new question that was just formed.)

Step 7 DETAIL/EXAMPLE/REASON Write the response to the question as the 3 rd sentence. EXAMPLE BODY 1 Example Topic Sentence: Tobacco should be banned because it detrimentally affects breathing. It blocks the airway with tar that builds up after tobacco use. Tobacco blocks the airway by leaving microscopic tar particles in the throat and lungs after each tobacco use. (This sentence provides further detail/ example/reason for the definition sentence.)

Step 8 EXPLAIN DETAIL/EXAMPLE/REASON Again, turn the sentence into a question. The answer to the question becomes the Explanation of the Detail/ Example/ Reason. EXAMPLE BODY 1 Example Topic Sentence: Tobacco should be banned because it detrimentally affects breathing. If blocks the airway with tar that builds up after tobacco use. Tobacco blocks the airway with tar by leaving microscopic tar particles in the throat and lungs after each tobacco use. What happens to the tar particles in the throat and lungs? The microscopic tar particles restrict air flow by filling openings in the throat and lungs with sticky fragments of tobacco that are difficult to move. {Steps 7-8 can be repeated for each Sentence Type (Detail/Example/Reason)}

Step 9 TRANSITIONS After you have explained the Detail/Example/Reason, you repeat the same question and answer format. However, try to attempt to allude to the next point from the TOPIC SENTENCE because this becomes your TRANSITION. EXAMPLE BODY 1 Example Topic Sentence: Tobacco should be banned because it detrimentally affects breathing. It blocks the airway with tar that builds up after tobacco use. Tobacco blocks the airway with tar by leaving microscopic tar particles in the throat and lungs after each tobacco use. The microscopic tar particles restrict air flow by filling openings in the throat and lungs with sticky fragments of tobacco that are difficult to move. Why are the tobacco fragments difficult to move? The tobacco fragments are difficult to move due to the large amount of nicotine used within tobacco products.

Step 10 Insert the TRANSITION and move onto the next Body Paragraph as dictated by the THESIS. The sticky fragments of tobacco are difficult to move due to the large amount of nicotine used within tobacco products.

Now You Try It Finish the next BODY Paragraph based on the TOPIC SENTENCE below in the manner that you have learned. REMEMBER, the transition should be the last sentence of the each BODY Paragraph.. THESIS: Therefore, tobacco should be banned because it detrimentally affects breathing, contains nicotine, and introduces carcinogens in to the body that cause cancer.
