11 Why Bioplastic? New Opportunities New materials for technicians to develop new products. Materials are manufactured from natural products. Strengthens regional companies in niche markets. Increase regional employment. Strengthens position of agriculture industry Market Potential Bioplastic market is rapidly increasing >15%/y. Austria has a strong worldwide position in plastic. Expected market share for Austria within EU ~ 10%. Market leaders for agriculture are located in Austria. Carbon Footprint Bioplastic has currently ~30% better carbon footprint in comparison to oil based plastic. In the future it will be possible to increase this through new technologies. Knowledge A main target in our project is to know the technology in all fields behind bioplastic e.g., - production technologies for raw materials - manufacturing technologies - end of lifetime handling for used materials
