Definition and Goals Problem Intubated patients cannot communicate using speech. Our goal To develop augmentative and alternative communication aid.

Definition and Goals How? Provide a convenient device for patients and nurses. Design a device which fully interprets patients’ needs. Minimize price of the device. Wireless communication between patients and nurses.

Background Number of patients? Approximately 60,000 (about 7 to10 patients in each hospital) Age range? Phrases and contents on the device can be designed for both children and adults.

Background Questionnaire done by 15 nurses 80% felt patients have difficulties to communicate with their care providers using speech or body language. 73% felt treatment of patients can be improved by better communication. 87% felt patients need a computer based communication aid
