9 Each week, CPS agencies in the U.S. received more than 50,000 reports of child abuse or neglect.

13 Emotional Abuse Emotional abuse involves a pattern of behavior that impairs a child’s emotional development and sense of well-being

14 What are some issues for the police in emotional abuse?

15 Physical abuse Why is it easier for the police to make an arrest on a physical abuse case?

16 About 5% of substantiated child abuse cases involves emotional abuse of psychological maltreatment

17 Multiple bruises, abrasions, or other wounds in varying stages of healing may indicate repetitive physical assault, particularly if they are in the same location on the child.

18 Stages of bruises:  Bright red bruises- 0 to 2 days old  Bluish or purple bruises-2 to 5 days old  Green indicates a bruise- 5 to 7 days old  Yellow bruises are 7 to 10 days old  Brown bruises are 10 to 14 days old  No evidence of bruises occurs after 2 to 4 weeks

19 How can the police use that information for during investigation?

20 Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) is the medical term used to describe the violent shaking of a child and the injuries that can occur.

21 SBS can cause brain damage, blindness, paralysis, seizures, and death

22 1,000-3,000 child are diagnosed with SBS, 100-120 die annually.

23 Girls are more likely to be sexually abused, 12 to 15 year olds in the most danger. Why?

24 Sexual Assault  Molestation  Rape  Voyeurism  Exhibitionism  Pornography  Forced prostitution  Incest

25 Child Neglect is the most commonly found cases of abuse.

26 What is child neglect?

27 NEGLECT Withhold food, shelter, clothing, love, and so forth.

28 More than 60% of the estimated 896,000 children were neglected by their parents or caretaker in 2002.

29 ELDERLY ABUSE

30 Passive neglect- caregiver is unable to provide the required care. Active neglect-intent to inflict harm.

31 What are the probable source of violence on the elderly?

32 Whom are abusing the elderly:  Adult children  Spouses  Friends  caretakers

33 Two General Categories of elder Abuse:  Domestic  Institutional

34 Domestic abuse  Victim leaves in their own home or in the home of the caretaker

35 Institutional Abuse  Lives in a nursing home  Foster home  Group home

36 Active neglect  A deliberate attempt by a caregiver to inflict injury or emotional stress to an older person
