Craigiebuckler, Aberdeen, AB15 8QH, UK RECIPE Final Aberdeen Progress meeting 29-31/05/2006 WP 03: Structure and diversity of the microbial loop UK progress Rebekka Artz Eileen Reid Stephen Chapman

D10 Genetic diversity of fungal communities Completed for WP1 – biogeographical effects shown, but within each country fungal communities are more similar to advanced/intact stages with each regeneration stage 1 st paper submitted to Environmental Microbiology on the fungal diversity of Scottish bogs (as introduction paper – this includes sequencing data) 2 nd paper on structure of WP1 data in prep. Still needs some stats (Mantel tests for vegetation/location data exploration) WP2 samples very problematic, still working on these….

?

III. Fungal community structure analysis Changes in the overall composition with regeneration stage

Sarcoleotia turficola: a rare fungus growing in association with Sphagnum spp. Potential indicators of regeneration? 68% of all clones were not identifiable to Genus or Order (!) level Phialocephala spp: fungi growing as root endophytes/saprophytes in cool wetlands
