3. In more detail Metaphors and stories give us connections to characters, plot, drama, emotions etc Key effects are to simplify the message create ‘word pictures’ ( visual image) make it easier to remember

4. Sentiment of Collective Is linking with your audience by creating an ‘us’ out of ‘me’ and ‘you’. Use words such as ‘you and I’, followed by ‘we all’, The aim is to close any gaps between speaker and listener. Remember : everyone wants to belong.

5. Rhetorical questions (a question that does not need an answer) Creates interest / a puzzle / intrigue in the listeners minds. helps to ‘bring them in’ through focus, collective. Best used at start (as attention getter) or finish (as call to action).

6. Moral conviction We all ‘know whats right’ (don’t we?) and this can be a powerful collective appeal. The moral ‘high ground’ is a clever way of making it difficult for others to disagree with you.

7. Contrasts A good way of focusing attention quickly Also sets up a collective if combined with a rhetorical question / sentiment of collective.

8. Goals and confidence Transformational leadership is about big things (!) “you cant get there from here” sort of things “a man on the moon by the end of the decade” First there was the idea.. You have to swing it by being big and loud.

9. Charismatic speech competition You each have to some up with a charismatic speech using the tricks outlined in this presentation. It can be about any topic It can be up to 3 minutes long. It will be scored by your class mates. Best one gets a chocolate fish.
