PURPOSE- EXPOSITORY ESSAY Five Paragraph Essay Examine an idea Gather and evaluate evidence * Common evaluation tool (especially on exams)

EXPOSITORY ESSAY Five Paragraphs: Paragraph 1- Introduction- thesis Paragraphs 2-4- Evidence based(body) Paragraph 5- Conclusion **Logical transitions between intro, body, conclusion

DESCRIPTIVE ESSAY Describe: to tell or depict in written or spoken words; give an account of Essay asks students to describe: Object Person Place Experience Situation Etc.

DESCRIPTIVE ESSAY Paint an image Create a mental image in reader’s mind Help reader feel like they are apart of the story

DESCRIPTIVE ESSAY Be cautious of word choice- be concise Use sensory language- smell, touch, feel, see, hear Use figurative language- simile, metaphor, onomatopoeia, alliteration, personification, hyperbole Help reader connect Don’t just tell…SHOW!!

DESCRIPTIVE ESSAY Introductory Paragraph- sets the stage (who, what, where, when, why) Hook/Background info/thesis Body Paragraphs- Provide detail of experience Appeal to reader Provide Imagery Conclusion- Wrap-up experience; evaluates experience/importance *Uses effective transitions between intro, body, and conclusion

NARRATIVE ESSAY Tells a story Write using personal experiences Allows to be creative and “move” the reader May use pronoun “I”

NARRATIVE ESSAY Author can write about: An experience from the past Honorable mention Embarrassing moment Family vacation A recent event that is ongoing Current school year Athletics/after-school activity Something that happened to someone else Ex: a parent, sibling, grandparent

NARRATIVE ESSAY Think of using parts of a story: Introduction, characters, plot, setting, conclusion Think of purpose- similar to a thesis Clear language Effective conclusion

ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY- PERSUASIVE Examine/Investigate topic Form a position on topic Research/gather evidence

ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY Structure: Introduction- hook overview argument thesis- form position on argument (3 supportive reasons Body(3)- focus on one piece of evidence per paragraph Go F.A.R (factual, anecdotal, reference authority) Conclusion- Re-state thesis Effective closing remark
