URL is another way of saying ‘web address’. There are at least 3.5 billion websites in existence. Although there are billions of websites, each one has a unique URL. URL - Uniform Resource Locator http://www.bbc.co.uk/cartoons Unit 8.3_Lesson 1_CD Resource 1a_URLs presentation
3
What makes up a web address though?
4
Hypertext Transfer Protocol http:// appears at the beginning of all URLS. Hypertext Transfer Protocol is the set of rules which enables a computer to read a web page. Sometimes it contains an ‘s’ – https:// The ‘s’ stands for secure. You should always look for this when paying for goods online. http://www.bbc.co.uk/cartoons Unit 8.3_Lesson 1_CD Resource 1a_URLs presentation
5
www stands for ‘World Wide Web’. All websites used to include this, but nowadays some companies choose not to. www – World Wide Web http://www.bbc.co.uk/cartoons Unit 8.3_Lesson 1_CD Resource 1a_URLs presentation

The letters immediately after the company name show the domain type. This can give us information about who made or owns the website. For example:.org is an organisation. Charities and other not-for-profit companies use this..co is a company (not American)..me is a domain type designed to be used for personal websites. We can usually tell where a website originates from these two letters. Country type http://www.bbc.co.uk/cartoons.fr.br.ie.es.de France Brazil Ireland Spain (Espa ñ a) Germany (Deutschland) Unit 8.3_Lesson 1_CD Resource 1a_URLs presentation

http://www.bbc.co.uk/cartoons Path to file or resource Everything that comes after the country type refers to the page within the website that the URL is pointing at. In the example above, the path is /cartoons. This means that this URL is for the page on the BBC website which contains cartoons. The path is normally separated from the site’s domain name with a / (forward slash). Unit 8.3_Lesson 1_CD Resource 1a_URLs presentation

The next part of a URL is the website’s domain name. Domain names have to be bought. Once a person or organisation has bought a domain name, no one else can use it because each URL has to be unique (meaning the only one!). http://www.bbc.co.uk/cartoons Domain name Unit 8.3_Lesson 1_CD Resource 1a_URLs presentation
