Introduction: Genetics The Big Picture
2
All Normal Cells Contain 46 chromosomes or 23 pair.
3
The Nucleus Contains the genetic information of the cell
4
Here are Chromosomes 23 pair or a total of 46 chromosomes.
5
Sperm and Egg are Sex Cells These specialized cells contain only 23 chromosomes. This is an egg.
6
Sperm Males produce sperm cells.
7
Egg Women produce eggs.
8
Fusion (fertilization) Sperm fertilizes egg to produce a fertilized zygote with full compliment of 46 chromosomes.
9
Human Embryo A fertilized human embryo. Life begins!
10
Back To Chromosomes Remember, the chromosomes exist inside the nucleus.
11
Chromosomes Contain DNA: deoxyribonucleic acid
12
Genes Located: Along the DNA Humans have 30- 40 thousand genes Genes are information which code for proteins
13
Tons of Information Each cell contains enough info to fill a 1,000 volume library!
14
Proteins 100,000 kinds Make up 20% of our mass Made up of amino acids
15
Function of Proteins Structural support for cells, tissues, organs Movement: muscle Transport: hemoglobin Defense:antibodies Catalyst: enzymes
