Objective: To trace flow of energy through living things
Ecology- Energy Flow Objective: To trace flow of energy through living things
2
Objective: To trace flow of energy through living things
Producers/Autotrophs: use energy from sun/chemicals to produce food. From sunlight—photosynthesis From chemicals—Chemosynthesis
3
Objective: To trace flow of energy through living things
Consumers/Heterotroph: rely on other organisms for their energy and food supply Herbivores- eat plants Carnivores- eat meat Omnivores- eat plants and meat Detritivore- eat plant and animal remains (called detritus) Earthworms, snails, crabs Decomposers- break down organic matter Fungi and bacteria
4
Objective: To trace flow of energy through living things
Energy Flow Food chain and Food web track energy flow Webs are made up of several food chains
5
Objective: To trace flow of energy through living things
Trophic level: each step in a food chain 1st producers 2nd consumers 3rd consumers 4th consumers All depend on the trophic level below them.
6
Objective: To trace flow of energy through living things
Ecological pyramid- Shows amounts of energy or matter contained in each trophic level Energy pyramid- Only 10% of energy is passed to next level
7
Objective: To trace flow of energy through living things
Biomass pyramid- Living tissue within given trophic level (shows food available for each level)
8
Objective: To trace flow of energy through living things
Pyramid of numbers- Number of individuals at each trophic level (not always a pyramid shape--- a tree is one organism while a shrub is one organism)
