VOWEL SOUND

2 DIPHTHONG A diphthong is a combination of two vowel sounds. Diphthongs are vowel but they differ from the pure vowel because articulation involves a glide from one vowel to the other . In the word ‘day’ , the articulation of the diphthong in this word starts with /e/ and ends with /i/ - / ei/ There are eight diphthongs 1. /ei/ as in day , pay, gate, table

5 WH- QUESTIONS WH- question are the questions beginning with the WH-words such as what , who, when,, where, which, why and how. These are statement which seek information about Subject of the sentence Object of the sentence Action in the sentence Place of action Time of action

(f) Manner of action Examples Who ate the mangoes ? Where are you going? When did you arrive? Whose bag is this? How did you get there? What do you want?

7 ‘ Who’ begins a question which ask for information about the subject of the sentence if the subject is a person. e.g Tunde bought a bottle of drink from the supermarket yesterday Question : Who bought a bottle of drink ? Answer : Tunde It also begins a question which indicates that the object of the sentence is a person.

8 E. g Who is he calling. Sola Who is that
E.g Who is he calling ? Sola Who is that ? Wole ‘ whose’ begins a question which asks for information about ownership E.g whose pencil is this ? ‘ What’ begins a question which seeks information about the subject and object of a sentence E.g QUESTION : What did he buy ?

9 ANSWER : He bought a pair of sandal (object) What is coming
ANSWER : He bought a pair of sandal (object) What is coming ? ANSWER : A car is coming (subject) ‘ Where ‘ begins a question which ask about the place of action. E.g Where did you spend your holiday ? ‘When’ introduces a question which asks about the time of action .e.g When did you buy your bag ?

10 RESPONSES WH- questions require complete responses in writing and short responses speech. E.g What do you want ? water _ speech I want some water _ writing Note that when there is auxilliary at all in the statement appropriate form of Do (do, does or did ) used in the question e.g They met somebody

11 Who did you meet. I like one of them Which of them do you like
Who did you meet ? I like one of them Which of them do you like ? However, note that when the verb with statement is BE ( am , are , is, was, were, ) there, is no need for the auxilliary DO He is somewhere at the moment Where is he at the moment ?
