Chapter 10, Section 1 Notes Title: A Clash of Armies
Main Idea: The Texas Army scattered and divided as Santa Anna moved into Texas in early 1836. Key Terms: recruit
2
I. A Missed Opportunity When General Cos surrendered San Antonio in December 1835, Santa Anna was furious. He determined to punish the Anglo and Tejano rebels who defied the Mexican government. He planned a return to Texas for revenge. In early 1836, the Texas Army got smaller. WHY? No strong leadership; lack of organization and training; most soldiers returned home from San Antonio

I. A Missed Opportunity Also, most remaining in the Texas Army were new from the U.S.A. They came for: Land promised by the Texas government Strong belief in liberty Spirit of adventure
4
II. Texas Forces Are Divided
The Texans BIG problem: No single leader was in control. Sam Houston was elected commander, but some refused to recognize his authority.

II. Texas Forces Are Divided
The provisional government led by Henry Smith gave command to other Texas men too: James C. San Antonio James W. Goliad Johnson & San Patricio D. The army was scattered; and there was little communication or coordination.

III. Santa Anna Moves North
A. Meanwhile, Santa Anna moved his army of 6,000 soldiers northward to Texas. Some soldiers were recruited, or enlisted into the army. Most were untrained and undisciplined; had poor equipment, were barely fed, and were forced to fight against their will.

III. Santa Anna Moves North
Most Texans expected him to arrive in the Spring; but he marched his army in the Winter (losing men and oxen along the way). Santa Anna divided his army into 2 columns: He led the larger army towards San Antonio. General Jose Urrea led the smaller army towards Goliad.

IV. Texans Occupy the Alamo in Early 1836
A. Texas troops occupied the abandoned mission at San Antonio de Valero in January. It was built in 1718; and once housed a Spanish colonial company from Alamo de Parras. General Houston ordered Colonel James Bowie, known for his large knife, and 25 volunteers from Goliad to help defend the Alamo.

V. Travis Arrives At the Alamo
Lt. Col. William B. Travis and about 30 soldiers from San Felipe arrived at the Alamo in February. Later, former U.S. Congressman David Crockett of Tennessee was one of many volunteers who arrived to help. He was offered command; but preferred to serve as a private (the lowest rank) in the Texas army. At least 9 Tejanos helped defend the Alamo because they opposed Santa Anna’s dictatorship.

V. Travis Arrives At the Alamo
Colonel Neill had to leave his command at the Alamo due to a family illness. Bowie was chosen commander of the volunteers; and Travis was chosen commander of the regular army. After Bowie became ill, he passed full command to Travis. Although scouts reported that Santa Anna had crossed the Rio Grande, Travis still believed he had time to prepare for battle. Wednesday/Thursday – We will finally breakdown the “Battle of the Alamo” in Chapter 10, Section 2!
