2 Kansas-Nebraska Act January 23, 1854 Stephen Douglas introduces bill to split Kansas and Nebraska into separate territories. Would open to popular sovereignty. Bill is passed, they will vote on whether or not slavery would be legal in territories.

3 Sack of Lawrence Settlers from north and south pour into Kansas to vote for the election for territorial legislature in March 1855. People came illegally to vote from Missouri led by Sen. David Atchinson. Slavery is legalized, upset abolitionists set up rival government in Topeka known as Lawrence.

4 Sack of Lawrence A proslavery grand jury decide actions of those in rival Lawrence were traitors. 800 armed men entered Lawrence from orders from grand jury. Burned down antislavery headquarters and several newspaper printing presses, also looted homes and stores.

6 Pottawatomie Massacre Abolitionist John Brown heard of Sack of Lawrence, took it upon himself to do something. Was misinformed there were 5 deaths, so he and his followers pulled 5 men from their sleep, hacked off their hands, and stabbed them with broadswords. This triggered dozens of violent incidents in Kansas. Approximately 200 were killed.

8 Violence in the Senate In Senate, Charles Sumner verbally assaulted his colleagues for support of slavery. Was particularly derogatory to Andrew P. Butler. In response, Bulter’s nephew beat Sumner on the head. Causes brain damage.
