3 Module Briefing This module prepares students for employability and includes ‘people’ skills – team working, – delivering presentations, – client relationships and attending meetings – and ‘environmental’ issues – health and safety, business ethics

4 Module Aim Prepare students for employability Enable students to conduct critical self-analysis and reflection and develop a range of employability skills. Develop appropriate skills needed by graduates to compete in the labor market. – Develop skills in research, communication, presentation, taking initiative and working in teams. Develop reflective learning

9 Work placement/Job preparation (20%) In preparation for a work placement or future employment you MUST include the following three components as part of your coursework on this module. – PDP Task A: Research subject-specific companies and job scenarios – PDP Task B: Covering Letter – PDP Task C: Curriculum Vitae

10 Task A: Research subject-specific companies and job scenarios (5 marks) You are required to select and include details of five specific jobs/placements in your chosen field taken from newspapers, websites or journal advertisements. – Include a copy of the adverts (with appropriate referencing) and – a brief summary of the companies and roles you have chosen to apply for.

12 PDP Task B: Covering Letter (7.5 marks) Prepare a covering letter introducing yourself to the prospective employer covering the following: – Who you are? – Why you are writing to them? –what post are you looking for with them? – What can you offer them? – what is your experience, aptitude etc? This letter should be written in a professional and business-like fashion, aimed specifically at your chosen vacancy.

14 PDP Task C: Curriculum Vitae (7.5 marks) Prepare a CV to accompany your covering letter and personal statement that covers the job/placement requirements and promotes you to your future employer. Imagine that you were in the employer’s situation and ask yourself - would you employ this person on the strength of the letter, personal statement and CV they have submitted?

15 Personal Reflection (20%) This reflection forms a part of the personal development process with which you are engaged as a student. Each student should independently and individually produce a self-reflective learning account in relation to the module. This should be in three parts and must cover: – The individual’s personal experiences of working within the team; – An assessment of what has been learnt from the module; and – Personal statement.

16 Personal experiences of team working (1 page) (5 marks) Consider, for example, – how the role you adopted came about. – Did you take part in the decision making process? – Given your practical experiences during the module, what are your perceived strengths and weaknesses in relation to team working now and do you think this had any effect on how you carried out your team role? – What do you think went well and not so well in how the team came together and operated and why do you think this was so? – What do you think might have been done better in relation to the way in which the team functioned? – What were the lesson learned from the group work?

17 What has been learnt from the module (1 page) (5 marks) Consider and set out what skills, attributes and knowledge you feel you have most usefully gained from studying and working on this module, how you feel they will help to enhance your employ-ability in the computing environment and how you might go about developing them further.

18 Personal Statement (2 – 3 pages) (10 marks) The university PDP includes an annual personal statement, summarizing your progress, reflecting on your achievements and planning for the future. – Reflection on the semester modules – Feedback – Action Planning

23 Group report (25%) The major objective of the Descriptive Study of Networking and IT Security Organizations is to – Make students have better understanding of the realities and practical knowledge of the Industry and organizations, – The functional departments in the Organization and – Job hierarchy within – To develop researching instincts among students – Prepare the students with enough understanding about their employability prospects to enable them to be more prepared for the job interviews and organizational expectations from them

25 How to conduct the Study Request for an organization coordinator /guide in the organization. If accessible, – visit the organization and have a walk through and identify the departments in the Organization. If the Organization is not directly accessible to your group, – try to get relevant information from the organization coordinator/guide and collect information from other relevant sources like company

26 How to conduct the Study (contd..) Make the organization chart for the organization and try to understand the functions of the employees, managers and supervisors in the departments. Record the observations of yours and clarify with your coordinator/guide to check if the same is correct.

27 How to conduct the Study (contd..) Identify briefly the key functions of identified departments and try to understand how the process is carried out. For example, Purchase and Materials department; Process could be collect intends, check intends, find suppliers, get quotes, decide whom to purchase from, prepare and issue purchase orders, follow up till delivery is got.

Write your suggestions/recommendations about the employability factors, scope and opportunities in the Organization. Explain about your group’s learning experience from the exercise and how it is useful for your career

30 Referencing In the course of preparing your report, you will be doing some research, and you should find some useful information from books, journals, web-sites, etc. that you will want to incorporate into your final report. Any such material that you use should be properly referenced using the Harvard Format of Referencing and it should be sited in the main body of your report.
