2 Objectives  Be able to describe the purpose of both long and short term goals  Identify the most neglected and essential components of rehab  List the criteria for return to play

3 Goal of Rehab Program  Long Term Return athlete to practice & competition as quickly & safely as possible

4 Goals of Rehab Program  Short term Provide Correct 1 st aid & control swelling  Begins IMMEDIATELY  Most critical part of rehab  Use RICE Control pain  Always some with an injury  Extent determined by:  Severity of the injury  Athlete's individual response to & perception of pain  Circumstances under which the injury occurred Restore Range of motion

5 Goals of Rehab Program cont…  Short term Restore muscular strength, endurance, & power  Most ESSENTIAL in restoring body part to preinjury status  Exercises that benefit rehab:  Isometric  Progressive resistance  Isokinetic  Plyometric

6 Goals…short term… Reestablish neuromuscular control Regain balance Maintain cardiovascular fitness  Most NEGLECTED component of rehab Functional progression Functional Testing

7 Criteria for Full Recovery  Decision made by athletic training team  Athlete must have: Full or near full ROM Pain free Reduced or no swelling 85-90% strength Pass functional tests
