8 EVERYONE HAS PREJUDICES………
We can’t help but have preconceived notions…… prejudices…. We all have prejudices about other people based on their social groups.

9 What is prejudice? Prejudice is learned pre-judgement toward others and comes from internalized thoughts, feelings, attitudes and assumptions based on the groups to which they belong. Prejudice is based on limited knowledge or experience with a certain group. Prejudice comes from simplistic judgements and assumptions which are made and projected onto everyone from that certain group. Everyone has prejudices based on their own experiences.

10 When do prejudices become dangerous?
Collective prejudices, those we learn from the culture at large, about our own and other social groups are more harmful than our own individual, personal experience prejudices. Collective prejudices whether positive or negative are unfair because they are not earned by the individual but rather granted or imposed based on ideas about the group the individual belongs to.

11 Are our prejudices necessary?
Prejudice is part of how we learn to sort people into categories that help us make sense of the world (boy/girl old/young, rich/poor etc.) However, we are SOCIALIZED to percieve and value these categories differently.

12 STEREOTYPE AND PREJUDICE
Stereotypes refer to simplified characteristics given to a certain group. Ex: Elementary school teachers are nurturing. When we meet somone who doesn’t fit a certain stereotype we either don’t notice or we think of that person as an exception. When we do meet someone who fits the stereotype, this just reinforces the particular stereotype in our minds. Stereotypes turn into prejudice when we add value to the particular stereotype. If an elementary school teacher is not obviously nurturing, we may believe that our child will not have a great school experience with the teacher.

13 What do we do with our prejudices?
We all have prejudices, even though we may think that we don’t. Holding prejudices is built into our socialization. Can we overcome our prejudices? First we must bring our prejudices to the surface so we can acknowledge, reflect and then challenge them. Some prejudices are socially acceptable…… why? [read from page 32 middle of the page] Stereotypes -- Stossel In The Classroom

14 Our prejudice toward others guides our thoughts, organizes our values and influences our actions
When we don’t acknowledge and reflect on our prejudices, they can then shape our behaviors.

16 Discrimination Discrimination occurs when we ACT on our prejudices.
Acts of discrimination can include ignoring, avoiding, excluding, ridicule, jokes, slander, threats and violence. Messages that reinforce certain prejudices are everywhere and help reinforce discrimination.
