Announcements and Reports – Jay Hoeflinger and Sam McGrew were co-chairs of Candy Day. Jay reported that in spite of a cold, wet, windy Friday for Candy Day contributions were pretty good. So far $2,724.24 has been deposited in the bank plus an additional $120 in checks.
10
Sam McGrew said that when he and Herb Bail arrived at the County Market on Duncan and Kirby they found the Shriner’s were already there until noon. The manager had double booked by mistake. So the manager suggested we come back Sunday 11 to 1 which is their busiest time. They returned and, just to check, Sam kept track of collections for that two hour period. It was $250!
11
President Gonsiorowski presented Jay and Sam with Candy Day pins for their efforts as co-chairs. He also presented Herb Bail with a pin for returning on Sunday to take collections. Several members reported uplifting stories of encounters with people during their shifts on candy day.
12
Program – Our speaker today, Charlie Osborne, asked "How many here would like to get rich quick?" Well sorry, you're talking to the wrong person.
13
If you listen to CNBC or Bloomberg you might hear the expression, "There are more buyers than sellers today" or "more sellers than buyers."
14
He hates that line, because it is so obviously not true. For every trade there must be a buyer on one side and a seller on the other, otherwise, no trade.
15
He talked about the Federal Reserve and the belief by many that the Fed is going to cause hyper inflation buying mortgage backed securities.
16
He does not believe that is necessarily the case because the money will be paid back over time as the underlying mortgages are paid.
17
The key question is what the Fed does with the money afterwards. He said there is a lot of mystery behind the Federal Reserve. He shared a treasury chart showing interest rates from 1790 to present.
18
Pension funds of all kinds are in trouble. Many companies, certainly not all, have large pension liabilities and have based their calculations on an estimated rate of return of 8.5% which is grossly optimistic.
19
He predicted that profit margins will go down in the next ten years. He warned, "Be careful if someone says to move your bonds into stocks, don’t reach for yield in a low rate environment, it can be dangerous."
20
A question from the audience: "Do banks want our money anymore--the interest is so low, almost zero." Answer: Charlie assured us that banks do want our money, but that they cannot pay high interest rates on deposits when they loan money at 3 or 4 percent. The River Bank
21
He told us about the old 3-6-3 rule; Borrow at 3% - loan at 6% and on the golf course by 3 o’clock.
22
Tailtwister – Tom Yaxley fined Pedro Heller for not greeting and asked him to carry the bucket today.
23
He fined Marvin Paulsen for missing Lions meetings while traveling to Turkey,
24
Everyone at David Hunter’s table paid for David’s birthday,
25
Sam McGrew for selling Gordie a $5 ticket for $10 and giving him no ticket and no change,
26
Gordy for hiding the flag behind the screen,
27
David Lin for Uni High’s soccer team being in the finals,
28
Omer Ben for having won the lottery,
29
Weldon Garrelts for Tom’s hearing aid contribution,
30
and President Ted Gonsiorowski for only working one hour of his two hour shift during Candy Day.
