Big Metals

Big Metals to Know Some metals, particularly transition metals can have more than one charge, so it is necessary to be careful when naming these compounds! There are 4 transition metals that you must become familiar with. Fe, Iron: 2+, 3+ Cu, Copper: 1+, 2+ Sn, Tin: 2+, 4+ Pb, Lead: 2+, 4+

How to name big metals Using the neutral formula you can tell what the charge of the transition metal is in the compound. EX. PbS Since we know that Sulfur is in GROUP 6 it has a 2 - charge. From this information we conclude that lead has a 2+ charge instead of 4+, since the compound is balanced.

Compound formula  Compound Name When naming a formula with a big metal we specify the charge by including a roman numeral in the name. Ex: PbS= Lead (II) Sulfide- The roman numeral II tells us that Pb has a 2+ charge. What is the charge on copper in the following formula? Cu 2 O, How would we name it? Copper (I) Oxide **Oxygen has a 2- charge and Copper can be 1+ OR 2+ so since there are 2 Cu atoms we know the charge is 1+.

Compound Name  Compound Formula Copper (I) Bromide Since Copper has a charge of 1+ or 2+ we must use the roman numeral to know which charge is present. Copper 1+ and Bromine 1- CuBr **Be able to recognize any transition metal when given the name!
