Islam: Origins No separation between religion and government Islam (submission to the will of Allah) = submission to will of the Prophet – Muhammad Led military campaigns, which attracted large numbers of supporters and followers

Islam: Origins 1.) 630 – Muhammad returns to Makkah with 10,000 men; city surrenders and most convert to Islam 2.) Muhammad proclaims Kaaba to be a sacred shrine of Islam 4.) Muslims encouraged to make the pilgrimage to Makkah - Hajj 3.) Muhammad dies 2 years later

Teachings of Islam Shares Similarities with Christianity & Judaism Monotheistic Allah (God) – all-powerful being, created everything Offers salvation and hope of afterlife

Teachings of Islam Has some differences from Christianity – Jesus considered divine Muhammad not divine (like Moses in the Jewish faith) – just a man Simple and direct faith – obey will of Allah Way of life; live lives according to 5 Pillars
