SYLLABLES & SOUNDS & PHONETIC SPELLINGS

1. Most words are broken up after a vowel.
Syllables 1. Most words are broken up after a vowel.

2. If the word has two vowels together, it is usually broken up after the last vowel…. UNLESS the word ends in two vowels, you will split the vowels.

3. However, if a word has two consonants, the syllable usually breaks between the two consonants. Remember “ll” “Ch” “rr” are letters by themselves. (This rule will override the first rules if two consonants fall together)

4. If a word has a consonant left over at the end, add it to the last syllable. Consonants can’t stand alone!

5. A vowel can stand alone at the beginning or ending of a word

6. If there are 3 consonants, normally the last two will stay together and the first one will go with the syllable before.

Spanish Words are normally stressed on the second syllable unless another stress occurs due to an accent mark.
