Small flat topped hill 2 or more steep sides Often dark red or yellow What mesas look like:

How mesas form: Originally part of a plateau Erosion wears away the sides A mesa is formed Erosion of mesas forms a butte

As you can see, the top of the mesa is still forming because it hasn’t flattened out.

Famous mesas in the United States Mesa Encantada (Enchanted) in New Mexico

Mesa Verde (green) in Colorado Ancient people called CLIFF DWELLERS lived in these “houses” that had as many as 200 rooms!
