3 SIMILE Definition: When one thing is compared to another using like or as Example: The bear hiding in my closet was like a furry mountain.

4 METAPHOR Definition: When you directly compare two unlike things Example: The bear hiding in my closet was a furry mountain. =

5 ONOMATOPOEIA Definition: Words whose sounds imitate their meanings Example: BOOM, BANG, WHOOSH RING DING

6 PERSONIFICATION Definition: Giving a plant, animal, or object human abilities and reactions Example: The dog tried to order pizza from the Krusty Krab.

7 ALLITERATION Definition: The repetition of a single beginning sound/letter in words that are close together Example: Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.

8 HYPERBOLE Definition: An extreme exaggeration Example: The hamburger Joe ate was as big as his head.

9 IDIOM Definition: A common expression which should not be taken literally Example: It was raining cats and dogs last night!
