4. Unfinished Fort Sumter. Note that only a few cannon have been mounted on the top tier, or barbette, and that the second tier gun ports, or embrasures, have been bricked up. The entire garrison lived in the officers’ quarters on the fort’s longest face because the interiors of the two barracks intended for enlisted men hadn’t been finished. (The civilian construction workers lived there.) Stair towers are in the angles where the walls meet.
