3 UCL LIBRARY SERVICES DART-Europe  Founding academic partners  UCL Library Services  Oxford University Library Services  Trinity College Dublin  Dartington College of Arts  ProQuest Information and Learning formed an initial technology collaboration with DART-Europe

4 UCL LIBRARY SERVICES Objectives  To work together for the discovery, retrieval and use of research theses from European universities  Working in an Open Access environment  Work underpinned by the Berlin Declaration on Open Access  European in scope  Aligned with national E-Theses developments in each member country  To provide a ‘vanilla’ service, fully Open Access  which is free at point of use  To develop a business model for Value-Added services

5 UCL LIBRARY SERVICES Achievements  European portal for access to E-Theses (DEEP)  See http://www.dart-europe.euhttp://www.dart-europe.eu  Portal maintained and developed by UCL Library Services  Currently harvesting records for doctoral theses daily from:  UCL Library Services  CBUC - Consorci de Biblioteques Universitàries de Catalunya  DiVA – doctoral theses from Nordic countries

8 Successes and …  DART-Europe, as a community-led and –owned development, has  Created a ‘vanilla’ service, conforming to Open Access principles  E-Theses can be deposited in Open Access repositories  Metadata harvested  European portal created for a European view  Content and software processes free at point of use  DART-Europe did not achieve ‘value-added’ services  Other, optional elements, which can be charged for, e.g.  Deposit tool  Additional functionalities  Preservation platform  Open Access Business model

10 UCL LIBRARY SERVICES Next Steps (2)  DART-Europe will seek endorsement from LIBER in July 2007  under the aegis of the LIBER Access Division  Investigate issues around the long-term sustainability of the partnerships and the portal  Consider a European bid to fund multi-lingual developments in the portal
