Week of: November 16 th – November 20 th News to Know SHORT WEEK: Please remember that next week is a very short week! We only have school on Monday and Tuesday of next week before the long Thanksgiving break. BOOK DRIVE: The week long Book Drive at Holmes was a huge success! Thank you to everyone who donated their gently used books to a great cause. END OF THE TRIMESTER: This Tuesday marks the end of the first trimester! However, report cards will not go home until December. Tuesday just marks the end of the grading period. HOLMES COAT DRIVE: The Holmes Coat Drive will continue through December 1 st. If you have any gently used coats or jackets that you would like to donate to a good cause, please consider sending them to school with your child. DAILY 5: This week’s first full rotation of Daily 5 was incredible! Everyone worked extremely hard in each station and completed their work. Chat with your child about what they enjoyed about Daily 5 and what they look forward to. NEW STUDENT: This week KD welcomed Caiden H. to our class. All were very respectful in welcoming him. Rowdy Readers STANDARDS: This week we worked on matching illustrations with both familiar and unfamiliar stories. With the unfamiliar stories, students listened to a story with no pictures and drew pictures on white boards as the story went on. They were encouraged to listen to details about the setting and characters to improve their pictures. We also worked on retelling stories and recognizing when different event occurred. Some of the stories that helped us out this week were: Our Special Sweet Potato Pie Grandfather Bear is Hungry Little Juan and the Cooking Pot There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves THANK YOU: A big thanks to Lena Hartman (Molly’s Sister) for coming in to read “Spoon” and “Have You Filled A Bucket Today” as our Mystery Reader. WORDS: We added the sight word “have” this week. We now have 11 sight words. If you would like the whole list, please let me know. We also added 5 new oral vocabulary words to our collection to improve our speech: appetite, feast, prefer, special and flavor. Math Madness WEIGHT: This week was a lot of fun in math as we worked on measuring weight. We worked with pan balances as we did whole group, small group and individual measuring of objects in our classroom. One thing that we discovered and shared in our discussions is that the size of an object does not necessary determine its weight. For instance, a small object might be heavy and and large object might be light.
