4 Figures of Speech Figurative language and literary devices used to create meaning. Personification Similes Metaphors Irony

5 Personification Personification is the attribution of a human characteristic to something nonhuman. “The tree waved at me in the distance.” “The wind sang a sweet song to the setting sun.” “The waves kissed the shore with delicate lips.”

6 Similes A simile is the comparison between two things using like or as. “Billy was as busy as a bee.” “The man was hard as nails.” “The land was dry as a bone.” “Jon slept like a log.”

7 Metaphor A metaphor is a word or phrase applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable often using “is.” “Love is a red, red rose.” “Life is a dream.” “He showered me with gifts.” “Those ideas are food for thought.”

8 Irony Irony is the a state of affairs or an event that seems deliberately contrary to what one expects and is often amusing as a result. The name of Britain’s biggest dog was “Tiny”. “Water, water, everywhere,
And all the boards did shrink;
Water, water, everywhere,
Nor any drop to drink.”

9 Tone/Theme Tone shows the attitudes toward the subject and toward the audience implied in a literary work Formal, informal, intimate, solemn, somber, playful, serious, ironic. Theme is the subject of a talk, a piece of writing, a person's thoughts; a topic. Betrayal, Fear, Power, Survival, Freedom Tone helps develop theme.

For each chapter you will: Create a title for the chapter Write down an example of each of the S.I.F.T. elements You will answer the 3 given questions for each chapter. Write down two words you don’t know the definition of, give the pages those are found on, then define them
