1 Teacher Page Objective: The students will analyze the human and physical factors that influence the power to control territory and resources. Suggestions / Ideas This assignment is designed to help students bring together some basic ideas about physical geography, settlement, natural resources, etc. and pull them together to draw conclusions about nations and power. This assignment could be done in a group format, but it might be better individually or in pairs. The teacher will need to review some of these basic ideas as well as perhaps model the basic lesson in the United States or some other area they are familiar with at this point in the year. This is not a complicated lesson, but they are likely to have trouble bringing it together. Students should know some basics of geography such as the importance of water, transportation, natural borders or barriers; this is a chance for them to put all this information together. A guide sheet is provided for the teacher only as a basic example, feel free to change the directions or focus as needed to complete the objective.

2 In the box below make a list of all of the physical factors that help people control territory. In the box below make a list of all of the human factors that help people control territory. The Power To Control Territory Imagine that Europe were suddenly completely empty of people, cities, or any construction at all. You are put in charge of building a new settlement for a large group of people. Based on the information in the boxes to the left, sketch out a map of your settlement and its location on a map. Though the settlement is made up, the location must be real. Based on the geographic location you have chosen above, what human factors would help you maintain control of this settlement?
