Predicting precipitation reactions
2
Ionic reactions of two solutions are double replacement reactions We will talk about this more shortly. The ions switch partners in a double replacement reaction. Ba(ClO 3 ) 2 + Ag 2 SO 4 BaSO 4 + AgClO 3 barium chlorate + silver I sulfate barium sulfate + silver I chlorate (we are not balancing yet)
3
Example Calcium Nitrate and Potassium Phosphate Ca(NO 3 ) 2 + K 3 PO 4 ? It helps to say the names of the ionic compounds Switch partners Calcium Phosphate and Potassium Nitrate Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 + KNO 3 Ca(NO 3 ) 2 + K 3 PO 4 Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 + KNO 3
4
Net Ionic Equation Ca(NO 3 ) 2 + K 3 PO 4 Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 + KNO 3 This is the full molecular equation. Write the net ionic equation for this reaction 3 Ca 2+ + 2 PO 4 3- Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2
5
DO NOT!!!!! It helps to say the name of the compound because you have to write the appropriate ionic formula. A common mistake is to try and carry the subscript over from the reactant side Ca(NO 3 ) 2 + K 3 PO 4 Ca PO 4 + K 3 (NO 3 ) 2 The charges don’t cancel out!!!!!
6
Predict the full molecular and net ionic equation between Copper II acetate and lithium sulfite Ammonium oxalate and cobalt II chloride Aluminum nitrate and sodium carbonate Hydrochloric acid and silver I nitrate
