2. French and Indian War In North America, Britain and France both claimed the Ohio River Valley. British settlers wanted to farm the rich soil there. The French wanted to trap beavers for their furs. In 1754 the argument over the Ohio River Valley turned into a war. The war almost lasted 10 years. Thousands of British soldiers fought along with many colonist against the French. Most Native Americans were friendly with the French and fought on their side. After 10 years the British won the French and Indian War and the land which we now call Canada.

3. The Proclamation of 1763 After the French and Indian War, many British moved west into the land they had won from the French. Native Americans were afraid that this movement of settlers would destroy their way of life. Some of them tried to drive the settlers away by attacking their forts and houses. In 1763, nearly 2,000 settlers died because of the fighting. The British made a new law that stated that colonist could not move west of the Appalachian Mountains.

4. The Quartering Act The Quartering Act ordered colonist to provide quarters for the British soldiers. This meant that the colonist had to allow soldiers to stay in their homes and provide them with food and other supplies. Colonists were furious.

5. The Stamp Act After fighting the French and Indian War, Britain needed money to pay its debts. Britain also needed to pay for the soldiers who remained in America. British leaders thought that the colonist should pay for the troops that were protecting them. So, In 1765, Parliament passed a new tax law called the Stamp Act. The Stamp Act required colonists to pay a tax on printed papers. The Stamp Act made colonist furious. Eventually, it was canceled.

6. The Boston Massacre In 1770, the colonist were still angry that British soldiers were living in their homes. They thought the soldiers were rowdy and rude. Also, they were upset when soldiers took jobs away from them by working for little pay in their spare time. While standing outside of the collectors house a British soldier is getting made fun of. The British Soldier hollered for help and 7 others came to help. 1 of the British soldiers said, “don’t fire”. One of the British soldiers thought that they said fire. He killed 5 people and wounded 6 colonist.

7. The Boston Tea Party After the Boston Massacre the colonist were taxed for British tea. The colonist did not like that so, one day the colonist dressed up like Mohawk Native American and the dumped 90 thousand gallons of British tea into the Boston Harbor.
