Photography Death Valley is truly a valley, and the elevation differences are dramatic. From the top of Telescope Peak to the west to Badwater at the bottom of the valley, there is an 11,000-foot elevation change – roughly twice the depth of the Grand Canyon.

Death Valley has more than 785 miles of road including hundreds of miles suitable for mountain biking.

Winter Temperatures Winter is mild with occasional winter storms. It has cool days, chilly nights, and rarely, rainstorms. If it rains, be alert for flash floods. Wind is common in the desert. Daily high 65°, daily low 38°, record high 89°, record low 19°, precipitation 0.19 inches are averages for the month of December. Remember, Furnace Creek Ranch is below sea level.

Getting there Because Death Valley is surrounded by six mountain ranges, there will be snow from some of the higher elevations entering the park. CA Hwy 190 transects the park west to east and the summit is 5,000 feet. 1)From Bakersfield to SR 58 to eventual entrance into the park from Hwy 190, 2)From Tahoe US 50 then south on Hwy 395 (spectacular views with snow everywhere, but a main thoroughfare so CalTrans focuses on keeping them clear of snow). Map coordinates for the Visitor Center: N36°27.70 W116°52.00 DO NOT DEPEND ON GPS NAVIGATION SYSTEM.
